A former British colony it gained independence in 1961 under the leadership of Julius Nyrere. He remained in power until his retirement in 1985 and under his guidance Tanzania set the foundations to enable it to move towards an independent democracy. Many Tanzanians remain desperately poor, surviving on less than $1.25 a day.

Various archaeological sources point to visits from many different cultures throughout Tanzanians history. Traders, invaders and colonists came from as far as the Middle East, Europe and Asia. All this has combined to produce a rich cultural heritage. It is this fusion of African, Asian and Arab design from which Kibibi suppliers create and hand craft their unique designs .
